Its altarpiece, done in the ornate, churrigueresque style and covered in gold, is magnificent. ❖ Navigate Playas del Caimanero Estuaries This is where the Baluarte river flows into the Pacific, forming seldom-visited estuaries where sea turtles nest. These little-visited estuaries, created by the mouth of the Baluarte river, are a nesting site for sea turtles. In the open ocean area, it is easy to spot dolphins from the beach, and you can swim in some areas. ❖ Hang Out on Chametla’s Beaches The Gulf of California starts here. It is thought that the first expedition led by Hernán Cortés reached this area. This is the beginning of the Gulf of California. It is also believed that this area—in what is now Sinaloa—is where Hernán Cortés arrived on his first expedition to start his conquest of the region.
